Description

This course equips EMS providers with the knowledge and skills to manage maternal and neonatal emergencies in the prehospital setting. Participants will recognize current maternal morbidity and mortality statistics and identify hypertensive states of pregnancy, including preeclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome, along with their potential complications. The course covers recognition and management of sepsis, maternal code management priorities, and the steps of assisting a birth. Attendees will learn appropriate assessments and care for both mom and baby before, during, and after delivery, as well as diagnosis and management strategies for postpartum hemorrhage. The importance of respectful maternity care is emphasized. Participants will also describe when to apply NRP versus PALS algorithms during newborn resuscitation, including how to calculate a postmenstrual age, and will delineate the steps of newborn resuscitation using the NRP algorithm. The course includes application of these steps to case scenarios and explains post-resuscitation stabilization priorities, focusing on the prevention of hypothermia and hypoglycemia in the first hours of life. In this interactive session, we will cover the initial steps of resuscitation for newly born infants and when to apply those same interventions for respiratory distress or failure outside of the birth timeline. In addition, we will discuss strategies to identify and treat hypoglycemia and prevent hypothermia, including a new intervention recently implemented through Dane County EMS. We will use case scenarios and audience discussion to apply this content to real-life situations, cover best practice recommendations to stabilize a neonate after an out-of-hospital birth, and answer all your questions related to newborns!
