Session Description & AbstractThe Advanced EMT is one of the most underutilized provider levels in EMS today. Too often viewed solely as a bridge between EMT and Paramedic, the AEMT possesses skills that can significantly improve patient care, strengthen crew performance, and support the sustainability of EMS systems. This interactive, case-based presentation explores the role of the AEMT in both rural and ALS-based services while emphasizing the importance of utilizing every provider to the full extent of their education and certification. Participants will examine common medical emergencies, discuss team-based decision making between EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics, and evaluate how appropriate resource utilization can improve patient outcomes. Special emphasis will be placed on rural EMS decision-making, including when advanced interventions add value, when rapid transport to definitive care should remain the priority, and how agencies can better utilize AEMTs as valuable clinical providers rather than simply future paramedics. The session concludes with a discussion on recruitment, retention, and workforce development, exploring how the AEMT certification can strengthen rural EMS while continuing to support future paramedic education.
