Compliance is critical to protecting EMS agencies from regulatory risk while ensuring high-quality patient care. This workshop will guide participants through the essential components of EMS compliance programs. Attendees will learn how to build a culture of compliance, engage leadership and staff, and understand the role of regulatory agencies and oversight. The session will provide an in-depth review of Medicare and Medicaid billing rules, HIPAA/HITECH requirements, the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and the Stark Law. Participants will also explore billing and documentation compliance, including medical necessity, PCS forms, and mileage requirements. The workshop will highlight common errors and risk areas, privacy and security issues in EMS, and cybersecurity risks in the field. In addition, attendees will gain tools for handling investigations, audits, and enforcement actions, including internal auditing, self-disclosure, and corrective action plans. The session will conclude with emerging hot topics such as the role of AI in EMS documentation and compliance.
