You have sat in ‘that class’ before, haven’t you? Yes, daunting classroom of continuing education. But wait, why does it have to be so mundane and boring? It doesn’t! Continuing education is not initial education. You are not teaching a new student material, you are honing the knowledge and skills of your current employees. Are you using repetitive information class after class or are you attendees out of their seats participating in clinical practice? Understanding the importance of information delivery by means of PowerPoint is important; however, understanding that a vast majority of your employees are likely kinesthetic learners, they will take more away from a brief classroom session followed by an in depth lab session in a clinical setting. Further, why are you not using subject-matter experts? EMS educators must be well versed in many facets of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, body systems, disease processes, and evidence-based treatments, but we tend to have our comfortable areas and our not so comfortable topics. Utilize subject-matter experts in these topics. These presenters bring more than knowledge, they keep your providers from hearing the same few people time and time again throughout the year.
