Dr. Mario R. Colella is a Professor and Division Chief of EMS Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has served as Wisconsin's State EMS and Trauma Systems Medical Director for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services since 2018, and as Chief of the Division of Emergency Medical Services Medicine at MCW since 2014.
Dr. Colella earned his B.S. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and his D.O. from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, where he also served as Chief Resident, followed by an EMS fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He later earned an M.P.H. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, with a subspecialty certification in EMS.
Over his career, Dr. Colella has held medical director roles across ground and air medical transport, hospital-based EMS systems, and county-level emergency management, including as Medical Director for Johns Hopkins' Lifeline Critical Care Transport Service and Director of Medical Services for Milwaukee County EMS. He currently directs MCW's EMS Fellowship and its International EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship, and has served on numerous state and national committees, including the Wisconsin State EMS Advisory Board and the National Association of EMS Physicians' Standards and Practice Committee.
He is a co-investigator or principal investigator on multiple federally funded research initiatives, including the Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN) and the Pediatric Prehospital Airway Resuscitation Trial, and has authored or co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications on topics spanning resuscitation science, prehospital airway management, and EMS systems design.
