As the use of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) continues to grow, EMS providers and emergency clinicians are increasingly likely to encounter these patients in both routine and high-acuity situations. Traditional assessment and resuscitation strategies often require modification due to the unique physiology of continuous-flow LVADs. This presentation will provide a practical overview of LVAD function, patient assessment, troubleshooting common device alarms, and evidence-based emergency management for scenarios including altered mental status, hypotension, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, bleeding, and device malfunction. Through real-world cases and interactive discussion, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to recognize LVAD emergencies, initiate appropriate interventions, and coordinate care with specialized heart failure and mechanical circulatory support teams.

1. Perform an appropriate assessment of an LVAD patient, including evaluation of perfusion, obtaining a Doppler blood pressure, and identifying key device components and alarms.
2. Recognize common LVAD-related emergencies, including pump malfunction, low-flow states, bleeding, stroke, infection, and cardiac arrest.
3. Implement evidence-based prehospital management strategies for patients with LVADs, including troubleshooting device issues and determining when standard ACLS protocols should be modified.
4. Coordinate timely communication and transport with an implanting LVAD center to optimize patient outcomes during emergency care.
