Description

Rural emergency medicine demands a different mindset—patients are just as sick, but resources, personnel, and access to definitive care are limited. This session explores the high-stakes reality of managing critically ill and injured patients in rural and critical access settings, where early decisions carry significant consequences. Drawing from real-world EMS and emergency department experience, participants will learn practical strategies for prioritization, airway and resuscitation management, and anticipating deterioration during prolonged transport. Through case-based discussion, this talk emphasizes operational decision-making and the critical role of EMS and emergency departments functioning as a unified system when help may be hours away.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, the participants will be able to:
1. Recognize high-acuity presentations in rural EMS and emergency department settings that require early intervention and proactive decision-making
2. Prioritize assessment and treatment strategies when staffing, equipment, transport options, and specialty resources are limited
3. Anticipate clinical deterioration and coordinate care effectively across the EMS rural emergency department interface during prolonged transport or delayed access to definitive care
4. Anticipate downstream complications and resource needs early to optimize patient outcomes during prolonged transport and limited specialty access.
