The body’s cholinergic and anticholinergic systems play a critical role in regulating nervous system function and overall physiological balance. Dysfunctions or exposures can lead to serious health consequences, including altered mental status, cardiovascular instability, and life-threatening emergencies. This lecture includes case presentations, pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment strategies for conditions related to cholinergic and anticholinergic emergencies and their pharmacology. The continuum of care will be explored, with practical considerations for EMS providers. Strategies for recognizing and managing cholinergic and anticholinergic issues in the field will be discussed. Attendee/Presenter interaction is encouraged.
