The body’s blood buffer system is essential for maintaining proper pH and overall homeostasis. Imbalances can lead to serious health consequences. This lecture includes case presentations, pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment strategies for conditions related to buffer system emergencies, as well as the “how and why” of the buffer system and its chemistry. The continuum of care will be explored, with practical considerations for EMS providers. Strategies for recognizing and managing buffer system issues in the field will be discussed. Attendee/Presenter interaction is encouraged.
