Ready for the Rare: High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) Response for EMS will provide education on the National Special Pathogens System, current and emerging special pathogens, as well as the steps that first responders and EMS professionals should take to safely care for a patient with a suspected or confirmed HCID. This course will provide a blend of interactive lecture and hands-on practice to reinforce key concepts and procedures such as Identify, Isolate & Inform, PPE considerations, wrapping a patient for transport, Category A waste management, and ambulance wrapping.
Participants are encouraged to bring their PPE ensemble as well as their donning/doffing checklists for their organization as PPE donning and doffing skills will be practiced.

1. Describe the National Special Pathogens System (NSPS).
2. Differentiate capabilities between Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 facilities as recognized by the NSPS.
3. Review what constitutes a Special Pathogen.
4. Define the Identify, Isolate, Inform process.
5. Identify considerations needed for Waste Management of Category A waste.
6. Recognize proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) required to care for a patient with suspected HCID.
7. Describe PPE breach management processes.
8. Demonstrate wrapping a patient for transport.
9. Demonstrate ambulance modifications and cleaning procedures when transporting a suspected or confirmed HCID patient.
