Description
This advanced workshop is designed for EMS clinicians seeking to improve competency in mechanical ventilation management in the prehospital and critical care transport environment. Participants will review core principles of respiratory physiology, invasive and non-invasive ventilation strategies, ventilator modes, waveform interpretation, and troubleshooting. Learners will then apply these concepts during hands-on skills stations and simulation scenarios utilizing the Hamilton ventilator platform and the Aurora simulation manikin

Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, the participants will be able to:
1. Explain the principles of pulmonary physiology and gas exchange as they relate to mechanical ventilation.
2. Differentiate indications, contraindications, and complications associated with invasive and non-invasive ventilation in the EMS environment.
3. Compare volume-controlled and pressure-controlled ventilation modes, including advantages, limitations, and clinical applications.
4. Describe the function and clinical application of Adaptive Support Ventilation (ASV) mode.
5. Demonstrate appropriate setup and management of CPAP and BiPAP therapy for patients in respiratory distress.
6. Interpret ventilator parameters, including tidal volume, respiratory rate, PEEP, FiO2, peak pressure, minute ventilation, and EtCO2 trends.
7. Identify and troubleshoot common ventilator alarms and patient-ventilator dyssynchrony.
8. Demonstrate proper ventilator setup and patient management using the Hamilton ventilator platform.
9. Apply ventilator management strategies during simulated EMS respiratory emergencies utilizing the Aurora simulation manikin.
10. Integrate assessment findings, waveform analysis, and patient response into ongoing ventilator management decisions.
